Book Publishing
The process by which literature or a piece of information is produced and then distributed is known as publishing. It is the action by which information is circulated among the public. Book publishing includes several stages of development such as acquisition, editing, graphical designing, production, marketing, and finally, distribution of books, magazines, or any literary work. Sometimes authors themselves publish their manuals. They distribute and display their own work. In other words, they provide the medium of exhibiting their own piece of work.
Book publishers and bookstores spend a lot of time in buying and commissioning the copy. It may be possible for you in a small press to depend entirely on material which is commissioned. But with increasing action, the need of the publisher will also be increased, and it will soon outdo the established arena of writers of the publisher. The writers at first submit a proposal or query letter to the publisher or to an agent following the guidelines of submission. The submissions which are sent to the publishers directly are known as unsolicited submissions. These submissions are mostly sent by the authors whose works have not been published earlier. Unsolicited manuscripts are assessed by the reader of the publisher to determine the quality or potential of the work to generate revenue. Then, they are referred to the acquisition editors who present their view to the editorial staffs. The time taken by the process depends entirely on the publishing company as the larger the company, the higher is the degree of assessment among the unsolicited submission and publishing of books. The submissions which are unsolicited are very rarely accepted. There are several book publishing companies who accept submissions only through literary agents. Thus, the responsibility of developing the writers and assessing the work falls completely on the literary agent rather than on the publishing company. For the book to be published, it must be discovered by the editor or publisher, who in turn, convinces other the staff members to publish a particular work.
After the acceptance of the work, the commissioned editors settle the intellectual rights and the rate of royalty. Then the editing of text, designing of front cover, and preliminary layout followed by sales and marketing of the publication is done. Once the text is finalized, the design template is made. It involves the preparation for printing the work which includes typesetting, composition, specifying the quality of paper, method of binding and casing, and finally, proofreading. After finally checking and signing-off of the proof, the printing begins. This displays the book exactly as it would become visible after it is printed. This is the last chance for a publisher to make any changes or to make sure there are no mistakes in the matter.
Book publishing companies are usually responsible for marketing and advertising aspects. The task of editing, layout designing, proofreading, and other features are given to freelancers.
